CHAPTER TWELVE

Seeing one of the aliens devour one of his long-range patrol ships in a matter of seconds caused Commissioner Sachim to groan. A long, slow, sad sound, the imagery he was seeing on Direwolf’s main display made it clear that these entities were not benign. Having been perturbed by the little drone sent forth by the patrol ship’s pilot, the alien had promptly reached out with a piece of itself, wrapped the end of the patrol ship, and pulled the patrol ship down and into itself, almost like am amoeba swallowing a smaller microscopic organism. Except those long-range patrol ships were the biggest thing in Golongal’s inventory, and the alien had snatched one of them out of space and eaten it like it had been nothing.

There had been no telemetry from the ship since. No transmissions. Just the pilot’s final, last scream of fear, followed by immediate silence.

And this had left the entire control center of the Direwolf in a state of shock.

Except for Arbai. She’d not been surprised. Nor even disturbed. She took it as a matter of course that the alien had destroyed one of the Combine’s ships, and eliminated one of the Commissioner’s pilots. He’d been foolish to waste an asset on an experiment. And though that experiment had now proven to all aboard that the aliens truly were a threat, Arbai could have told them that. And remained convinced that what they really needed to do was get ahold of one of Sankar’s people. Everything they needed to know about what was happening would be revealed once Arbai got one of Sankar’s people to talk. She’d managed it before. When both Akoni and Bayane had been in her grasp, back during a time when Arbai and Yangis has been working on a scheme with some Angelos. And had seen that scheme blown to pieces by Sankar and the others of his so-called Veracity Corporation.

“Furd Gods claw them all,” Arbai muttered under her breath.

“What was that?” Wotik asked.

“Nothing,” Arbai said. “Except, I think now that the Commissioner’s satisfied his curiosity, we probably should do something constructive. Sitting here, we can’t make any of the advanced work on spaceport fortification go any faster. And though I know Commissioner Sachim is perturbed by recent news that his own Combine forces on the Cho-Ma Continent appear to be turning against him, that’s a secondary concern to what these entities will do to us—and to the whole star system—if they’re not dealt with.”

“But you said it yourself,” Wotik said, wolfoid ears pricked up. “We don’t even know if we can do anything against these creatures. Ships? Whatever they are? So, what would be the plan now?”

“I think we’re safer on the move, than not,” Arbai said. “And we’ve got to locate the Bilkinmore one more time. We already know we can beat their shields, we just need to sink our claws into one of her crew, and we should be able to get some answers. As well as rid ourselves
